The group Numerical Methods for Simulation and Optimization develops numerical methods for the simulation of physical phenomena such as wave propagation effects or fluid forces, and methods for optimizing physical designs depending on this type of phenomena.
Design optimization concerns the problem to determine the material composition or modify the boundary shape of a device in order to satisfy a prescribed set of properties. Typically, we are interested in situations where the measure of performance concerns wave propagation effects or fluid forces. To solve such problems, we mainly use finite-element methods. Related questions considered are flow control and unsteady fluid-structure interaction.
