Nomura is a leading financial services group and the preeminent Asian-based investment bank with worldwide reach.

Nomura provides a broad range of innovative financial solutions tailored to the specific requirements of its clients through an international network in over 30 countries.

Based in Tokyo and with regional headquarters in Hong Kong, London, and New York, Nomura employs about 26,000 staff worldwide.

Nomura’s unique understanding of Asia enables the company to make a difference for clients through five business divisions: retail, global markets, investment banking, merchant banking, and asset management.

Nomura is a leading global equities trading house in Europe and has seen a rapid rise to prominence following its acquisition of collapsed bank Lehman brothers. In December 2008 Nomura was ranked 84th on the London Stock Exchange in terms of value and volume of shares traded, yet by June 2009 it had risen to hold the number 1 spot, a position it has now held for six consecutive months. In December 2009, Nomura’s equities division traded nearly £1bn more than its nearest competitor.

This incredible transformation could not have been possible without sophisticated IT systems and an industry-leading team – including the 40 highly-skilled developers based in Umea - to oversee the integration and look towards developing the systems and platforms that have kept the ‘new’ Nomura at the top of the pile since then.

The Umea team now have their sights set on ensuring Nomura emerges from the global financial crisis as a serious contender with the latest and best technology platforms on the street.

NOMURA IN SWEDEN

Nomura in Sweden has been delivering IT systems to the financial services industry in Europe, North America and Asia for almost ten years, and has a strong track record of delivery across critical equity systems.

It started in 2000 as a software development centre, and joined Lehman Brothers in 2003 before becoming Nomura in 2008.

The team’s responsibilities are wide-ranging. They develop and deliver a number of technology applications and platforms for data capture and analysis in equities trading, giving Nomura’s clients accurate, detailed analytics in real-time to provide unique insights into the market and help make smart, informed choices.

Nomura’s Umea team also delivers industry-leading platforms in compliance with financial transparency standards that provide not only trade reporting but market statistics and information.

Though based in Europe, the work developed in Umea has global reach – technology created here is deployed across Europe and Asia, and the team is deeply engaged in building out the supporting infrastructure for Nomura’s expanding US franchise.

PEOPLE

The company has close links with the Computer Science department at Umea University, meaning it has been able to recruit some truly exceptional developers.

The team is a group of highly skilled technologists (most hold Masters degrees in Computer Science) with unique experience from working as a “near shore” operation within a large investment bank.

Currently there is 40 staff under the leadership of Jonas Kroger, and the company still has room – and ambition – to grow its experienced team.
